December 6 2012

Kris’ medical team told us several times that once she was released from the hospital, it would be tough.  They were right.

Over the past couple of months, Kris has been hospitalized several times for a variety of reasons:  Pneumonia, malnourishment  gastro-intestinal issues and currently, rejection symptoms.  She remains the positive fighter that she’s always been.  She keeps getting knocked down and always gets back up.  She’s tougher than the cancer or the recovery.

When she’s not hospitalized, Kris requires 24/7 care and support.  Our family is living with us to help care for her.  We also have a network of friends who are helping us by taking care of chores and providing us with meals.  We’re extremely blessed and grateful for our family and friends’ support.  I can’t imagine trying to work through this without their help.

Your prayers, cards and notes of encouragement help.  When it’s toughest, Kris reads the blog and reaffirms that she has an awesome support network encouraging her and lifting her up.

Since her initial release from the hospital, it’s been a frenetic roller coaster of emotions and schedules.  Thank you all for your continued support and please continue to pray for Kris’ recovery.

Love to all of you from across the Atlantic. I am seven hours ahead of KC time, that means my prayers get to God like the Fed Ex man.
I will continue to hold you all in my heart.
Keep on keeping on, sister. You are one tough cookie.

Hi Kris, Thanks for the update. Good timing, as I saw John last night at our house (before the concert) and was asking him how you were doing. You all have been and will continue to be in my prayers.

Kris…always be assured you’re in our thoughts and prayers and most of all God will never leave you either!!!! That is such a comfort to me. Says so in Matthew 28:20. You’re loved and cared for….perpetually!

    Blessings always…Dianna

Hello my friend. It just so happens that one of my favorite anecdotes in in Mother Teresa’s book Thirsting for God is in today’s reading. “Frequently schoolteachers came to the mother-house in Calcutta to visit Mother while seeking a moment of closeness with God. Two of them, a Hindu couple, asked Mother Teresa this question, ‘Mother, tell us something to make us better husband and wife.’ Mother Teresa replied with her wit, ‘Smile at each other.’ The wife thought for a moment and asked, ‘Are you married?’ Mother Teresa replied, ‘Yes, and sometimes I find it very difficult to smile at Jesus, my husband, because he can be demanding.” I always smile when I read this quote. Keep up that beautiful smile. Keep the faith! Praying for you and your entire family. Jeri

I remember all those days with our daughter, Emily. Back and forth to the clinic, back and forth to the hospital. It is hard, but we are now 4 3/4 years post transplant, and you all will get here too. Just focus on the present moment, and allow everyone else to do all the other work. Our Emily had her transplant in March 2008, and we basically spent the first year “On Retreat”, especially the first winter after her transplant. Even though she was 7-12 months post-transplant, we weren’t going to take any chances. I’m so sorry that anyone has to go through what we did, and what you are. But you will get to the days, like we did, when you realize you’ve gone through a whole day without thinking about cancer. That’s a GREAT day. Just know that there are folks like us out here who know exactly what you’re going through, the challenges, the fears, the pain. Our daughter Emily is now 26 years old, and has embraced opportunities she never would have had without this HUGE detour. Allow us to encourage you and give hope and optimism. We’re just a few steps ahead of you on this path. P.S. You are absolutely BEAUTIFUL in your photo!

Ken and Kris, thank you for sending out this update. What a difficult time for your family! It’s at times like this when you realize the impact you have had on all our lives. You have so many people here in this community who love you, who are doing what we can to support you and make the little things in life a bit easier because you are focusing on the hard part–getting well. Every person who cooks a meal, helps with chores, posts on your blog, sends a card…every one of these people does all these things out of love for you and your family. Please know that if there’s ever anything more you need to send out a call and you’ll have many people here to answer. Stay strong, have faith and keep that beautiful smile.
