Urgent Need: Join the Bone Marrow Donor Registry

Kris Miner of Leawood, Kansas, has a rare form of cancer, Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma (CTCL), which has transformed into Stage 4B Large Cell Lymphoma. She is one of only 10 people in the world at any one time to have this type of cancer. Her PET scan revealed tumors on her skin, lungs and lymph nodes.

The best hope Kris has for recovery is a bone marrow transplant. Currently, of the more than 17 million people registered as bone marrow donors, not one provides a close enough DNA match for Kris.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please join the Bone Marrow Donor Registry today. Kris urgently needs to find a matching bone marrow donor in the next 7-9 weeks. We are specifically seeking individuals with German or Dutch heritage to join the registry as a potential match for Kris, though everyone between the ages of 18 and 60 is encouraged to join.

For more information, see the Bone Marrow Donation page.

MESSAGE FROM KRIS: Ken and I are grateful for the outpouring of support and prayers from our family and friends. As you know, I’ve been diagnosed with transformed cutaneous t-cell lymphoma and I’ve already started my treatment. Your encouraging messages and positive thoughts mean a great deal to me and give me strength for the days and weeks ahead.

Our purpose in starting this blog is to keep you up to speed on my progress at all times. I also hope to reassure you that I’m in the best of hands and am doing just fine. Many of you have called to express your concern and offer assistance, which Ken and I appreciate tremendously. We would love to speak with each of you individually, but there’s never enough time in the day to share as much information as we’d like. So we hope you will rely on this blog as your primary source of information, and we’ll connect with you individually as much as we can.

On the Updates page of the blog, we’ll post regular news on my progress toward recovery. For those of you looking for more detailed information, I invite you to visit the following pages:

For those looking to help, please visit the Bone Marrow Donation page to register to learn more about becoming a bone marrow donor or making a financial contribution to the National Bone Marrow Donor Program.

Please note that all of these pages will be updated with details as soon as they become available. We are at a very early stage in the process right now, and much is unknown. As my diagnosis is solidified and my medical team and treatment plan take shape, I’ll update the site so you have access to the latest information.

Again, thank you for your support. Ken and I ask for your continued prayers over the coming weeks as we set out on this journey toward recovery. We also invite you to share your comments here on the blog so our kids can read them and be encouraged.

Hi Kris, You have been in my thoughts ever since I heard the news. I often think about the time you called and we talked right after my melanoma diagnosis. I would love to repay you…let me know if you need an ear. I just registered for my donor kit. This is something I have wanted to do for sometime. I will also spread the word for you. It does sound like you are in great hands……..this blog is nice! (is this all Ken?) Please reach out if you need anything. Diane

Not a doubt in my mind that you will come out the winner in this battle.

Please let your “fans” know to contract me at kegjob@sbcglobal.net if they want to help with meals. I will be coordinating this throughout your treatment.

    In my thoughts daily,
    Kelly

    Kris-
You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. We are here for you, Ken, and the boys to give you whatever support we can in any manner. Alex was disappointed to learn you have to be at least 18 to register to be a donor. We will spread the word to try to find a match.

  8. 15 Lynn Adelmund June 1, 2012 at 2:25 am

Kris – lots of love and prayers coming your way! For strength and encouragement for you and your family, for wisdom and energy for your medical team, and above all, peace for you during the healing process. Unfortunately, I’m already one of the 17 million who don’t match, but I’ll do my best to help raise awareness and get you a donor!!

  9. 17 yacotzin alva June 1, 2012 at 2:33 am

Ken, you and your wife will be in my thoughts and prayers every single day. I don’t know her in person but I do know what a great person you are and I am sure that having you beside her every moment will make this easier. If I can help you in any way, please let me know.

  10. 19 Sara June 1, 2012 at 2:34 am

Erik and I both just registered on the National Marrow Donor Registry via http://join.marrow.org/krisminer . Everyday I pray that a match is found. I am going to spread the word to everyone I know to please consider joining the registry. Continue to LiveStrong.

    Hi Mrs Miner

My thought and prayers go out to you. I know that you can get through this. Always stay positive. You are a strong women and keep up the fight

  12. 23 David Grant June 1, 2012 at 1:35 pm

    Hi Kris,

Thank you so much for the update. My wife’s cousins are in need of bone marrow transplants as well so we’ve been partnering with local churches locally and nation wide to run national registry drives. We usually have several hundred new people added to the registry at each event. Hopefully these continued events will result in matches for both you and Marianne’s cousins. Until then, I will continue to send positive energy your way!

    • 24 teamkrisminer June 3, 2012 at 9:45 pm

      Hey David,

We’re putting together an outreach program for our church as well and I’ll ask Ken to get in touch with you. I wish the best for Marianne’s cousins and complete healing for them.

      Kris

  13. 25 Diann Roche June 1, 2012 at 2:06 pm

    Kris

I just wanted you to know I have you on all the prayer lists I know. Thanks for letting me know your update.

I remember when you first told me. You said then “all I want is to get my boys raised.”. Well it’s time to be setting a stronger intention. We said then okay so we don’t need to debate there is no cure. That’s not our concern. What is our concern is that you live a happy symptom free life.. Do you remember that conversation? You did for a long time. Just not long enough.

So, God, Kris needs your Holy Spirit to more in with all your angels (the big powerful ones) and bring her back to wellness. We don’t know how. That’s your department. She has more to do and needs a strong healthy body to do it with. Bless Ken and everyone on Team Kris with wisdom and extra energy. Use these circomstances to show others that you make a way, even when as humans we don’t see a way. Bless Kris with hope and faith in your miracles. Strengthen her family’s faith and joy by bringing Kris back to wholeness and wellness. Let her testimony bring others to know you as healer and Father of life and love and miracles. We love you. In Jesus name amen.

      Diann,

After your reading your message, I just wept. I do remember talking to you when I was first diagnosed and at the time thinking of what unknown challenges may lay ahead.

Thank you for the beautiful prayer Diann. I believe God has a special plan for me and will be glorified in all of this.

      Love,
      Kris

    Kris,

You don’t know me but I happened to run across your husband’s post on MTBR. I immediately registered to be a bone marrow donor. I pray that you find a match, you are healed, and your family had peace restored once again. If I could suggest one thing, look into the Gerson diet. and the Gerson Institute. http://www.gerson.org. You and your entire family are in my thoughts and prayers. Stay strong and stay positive.

    • 46 teamkrisminer June 3, 2012 at 10:21 pm

      Jarrod,

I love that our message is reaching so many people. Thank you for taking the call to action to become a donor and for your support. I haven’t heard of the Gerson diet but will check into it. Hopefully Ken will have the opportunity to meet you on the trail.

      Thanks!
      Kris

Stand with legs approximately shoulder length apart. Lift straightened leg upward in an explosive manner until feeling direct impact. (Screaming profanity while completing this procedure is optional.) Continue process repeatedly. You are now kicking cancer right in the balls. Feels good don’t it?
The Donor Movement has started in full. The word is out and spreading across the nation. Team Kris has morphed into an intimidating and formidable foe. There is power in the passion. Sorry cancer, you messed with the wrong gal. You were fooled by that beautiful face. FU cancer!

  26. 51 Sandy Pennington June 4, 2012 at 12:10 am

    Dearest Kris,
I continue to pray for God’s guiding spirit to help your doctors’ efforts to return you to health. You are such a spirited, joyous, generous wife, mother, sister, friend and Christian. You are an inspiration to me in my faith.
Ken, your love and support are such a blessing to Kris.
Thanks for starting the blog so we can stay updated on your progress.
Keep up the fight. Tackle each day with courage, strength and faith.

    Kris,
I am so sorry to hear this news at the end of a week that has had much bad news! My prayers will include you. I hope we can all turn your bad news into great news for everyone. You must be one of the healthiest patients your doctor has needed to treat! You look great in your picture with Nancy. You are both beautiful. I had so much fun babystitting at your house. You have a very scary diagnoses, but you can read here, how many people are praying and supporting you. Cancer is the Devil and we will not let him win!

  29. 54 Tamara Creighton June 4, 2012 at 2:50 pm

    Kris, Ken and family–

Sending you much love and many blessings in this trying and difficult time. I imagine it feels overwhelming! You are loved and supported by many, and I’m so glad you are keeping us all aware of your challenges and progress. I saw that another friend posted about Gerson therapy–I’d also offer that as something to look into. And one other resource that I’ve heard great things about, Dr Lodi and his cancer treatment program, http://www.anoasisofhealing.com.

If there’s anything I can do to support you, please don’t hesitate to ask! Laundry, cleaning, meals, or just a good foot massage. 🙂

I just heard about the battle you have been facing and I wanted to let you know I am thinking of you! You are one of the nicest and most caring people I have ever met and I so enjoyed working with you at ZMC. I tried to register on the bone marrow donation site but due to my scoliosis, I am not a candidate. I am thinking of you and your fight and you will continually be in my thoughts and prayers!

Dear Kris, You have been on my mind, in my prayers and thoughts since hearing your latest news. Zack and Chelsea are both praying for you and are registering. I’m on the Registry but no longer qualified due to my Lyme disease (darn it). You are a blessing to everyone who knows you and we all hope our prayers will return the favor of bringing you a blessing of wellness and renewed health.
With love, prayers and healthy thoughts,

  33. 64 Donna Lang June 11, 2012 at 2:04 am

Its hard to put into words all I want to say. We have been pen pals since we were little girls. I think 111 Austin street is the only address I know by memory. Though years, distance, and full lives have left gaps in our contact, I love you dearly. I will pray daily that you have the right match soon. Dave is already registered. My kit is on the way. I will see if we can mobilize our church and community here in Galveston. Mom just gave me your site today. I promise I will be connected and stand ready to be available in any way possible for you, Ken, and the kids. (I know how difficult it can be to be on the “kid” end of this. I will spend extra time in prayer for the kids.) My warmest thoughts and my utmost prayers. Cousin!

    • 65 teamkrisminer June 13, 2012 at 12:42 am

      Donna,

It’s great to hear from you! Mom tells me the entire city of Galveston is praying for us. Thank you for your steadfast prayers and sharing the message.

      Much Love,
      Kris

  34. 66 Cindy June 11, 2012 at 10:47 am

What blood type are you looking for? I am not real sure how this works.

  35. 68 deb asher June 11, 2012 at 12:05 pm

My son had 4th stage B cell lymphoma in 2008 at Baylor University. He did not use a donor, they harvested stem cells from his own bone marrow which the body accepts easier than a foreign bone marrow. He is quite healthy and cancer-free. I don’t know if this is an option for you. Best wishes.

  36. 70 Sandy Pennington June 11, 2012 at 2:31 pm

Great job on TV 5 this morning! Ken, your efforts to get the word out on social media are really awesome. I know this will pay off with the perfect match for Kris. Love you guys.

  37. 72 Marlene Lobner June 11, 2012 at 5:07 pm

  38. 74 Dorothy Mishko-Murdock June 11, 2012 at 5:38 pm

Kris, how would I go about seeing if I’m a match? I’m of German descent & would like to try & help. Best of wishes

    • 75 teamkrisminer June 13, 2012 at 12:53 am

      Dorothy,

Thank you for your offer! On the home page of this website, click on Bone Marrow Donation and you will complete a simple questionnaire. The Bone Marrow folks will send you a package in the mail. You simply swab your cheek and return it in the envelope provided and you will be contacted if you’re a match.

God bless you and please spread the word. We’re currently translating the web site in German and Dutch with hopes we’ll reach.

      Thank you!
      Kris

  39. 76 Sally Kinkhorst June 11, 2012 at 6:19 pm

Kris you have been in my thoughts and prayers since hearing your news. If there is anything that you need or that I can do, please let me know.

I have placed your name on the prayer list at church so you (and your family) are definitely being lifted up in prayer by lots of people. We also have a group that makes prayer quilts for individuals that are going through an illness. You can have the quilt (just a square that would cover your legs or from the waist up) with you and know that you are being prayed for. We would love to make one for you but wanted to make sure that this is something that you would be comfortable receiving (would be sent to you by mail). If you have a chance let me know if this is something that you would want and we can get started.

Please remember to let me know if there is anything that I can do for you or your family.

    Love and prayers.
    Sally

      Hey Sally,

Thank you for your prayers and those from your congretation. I would be honored to receive a blanket that was made for me as a reminder of those lifting me up. I’m always feeling cold and would love it! What a great gift.

      Love,
      Kris

    Kris,
Through an email from Laurie Ralston, I just this minute found out abut your illness. Of course you are in my prayers from this moment until you are cured. Also, I will complete the info on the bone marrow donation section of your web-stie. If there is a quicker way for me to provide the saliva sample (the site said it takes a few days to recieve the kit), please let me know. Ben is already in the bone marrow registery. I will also forward Laurie’s email to my friends and neighbors. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you or your family.
    Stacy

Also Kris, one of my fiends is 1/8 Danish and 7/8 German, but she has no health insurance or savings. If she was tested and was a match, would there be a cost to her for the donation procedure? She tried to find the answer to this question on the registry website, but couldn’t find it.

  41. 81 Beth Horner June 11, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Mrs. Miner, not a day goes by that you aren’t thought about by all your friends and family. We are all praying so very hard for you and I know if anyone is going to win this battle it is you. We’re all there for Jon if he needs absolutely anything as always.

    Lots of love,
    Meggie

I saw your story on the news and it broke my heart. I immediately went to the website to register and found I couldn’t because I have fibromyalgia, but I’ll share your story and blog about it. God bless!

  44. 87 Christine Vernon Say June 11, 2012 at 10:44 pm

    Kris,

This is not the way I wanted to get back in touch, for certain!!

When we worked together, I always admired your strength as a mother and your positive attitude. Sounds like you are still super-duper awesome, and have so many people who love you.

I wish you the best in the days ahead. My husband and I are registering, just as quickly as we can. I would love the opportunity to help, in some way.

    God bless you,
    Christine

I saw your story on KMBC news this evening. I’ve been on the donor registry since I was in college, nearly twenty years now. I appreciate you putting your story out there to encourage others to join the registry.

Something occurred to me while I was watching your story. Since you are looking for distant relatives that may be a match you might be interested in 23andMe. For my Christmas present several years ago, I had myself genotyped to look at my ancestry among other things. Basically, one purchases the service, and they send you a saliva test kit that you spit into and then return. They then analyze your DNA and then provide access to your information on their website. They have a pretty neat feature called “Relative Finder.” It compares one’s DNA with that of other members and then suggests people that are related. For me, I have 991 matches in the system of which 2 are 3rd-4th cousins, 8 are 3rd to 5th cousins, and 39 are 3rd to 6th cousins. These matches are from mostly people in the US, but also include people from all around the world.

From your matches, you can send an introduction or message to that member. It could be a good way to contact people that are genetically similar to you and get them tested to see if they might be a match.

    Their website is: https://www.23andme.com/
    Information on Relative Finder: https://www.23andme.com/ancestry/relfinder/

I hope this helps. Good luck.

    Kris,

Steve and I are sending positive thoughts your way.

  48. 95 Olivia June 12, 2012 at 5:46 am

    Hello Kris 🙂
I heard about your story and understand that someone with a German/Dutch descent would have a higher probability in yielding a donor match? I believe with 99% certainty that my mom and I are of matching descent… I will have to check with her, but in the meantime…if we wanted to get tested to see if we were a match specifically for you, is there anything in particular we would need to do? Or would we just mail for the donor dna packet? Do you check the registry often? You are in my prayers 🙂 – Olivia

  49. 96 Barbara Williams June 12, 2012 at 2:16 pm

    Hi Kris,
I just saw a posting on Sandy Kroh’s FB page and couldn’t believe it! I tried to register for the bone marrow donor site, but with my Celiac disease (autoimmune disorder), I’m not eligible. I then contacted your friend who is coordinating meals and hope to be able to help out that way. I’ll send your info to some people in Pella, Iowa–lots of Dutch ancestry there–and see if some of them might register; you never know where you’ll find a match.

Ken is doing a hell of a job with this social networking–way to go, Ken! Take care, Kris. It sounds like you have a good medical team locally, which counts for a lot. You’re in my thoughts and prayers.

Kris, I’ve sent off the e-mail to my friends at Central College in Pella, and they’re posting to the campus e-mail list, as well as forwarding it to their contacts at Northwestern College in Orange City. Perhaps with all the Dutch ancestry there, you’ll find a match!

      Angela,

I’m so glad you reached out to me! If you are a match, you may have to travel to Kansas City for a couple of days for the transplant. We ask you to register for the Bone Marrow registry and if you’re a match, you’ll be contacted. You can register by clicking on the Bone Marrow Donation link on the home page of this website.

      Thank you!
      Kris
